In September 1999, in Moscow there were a number of horrific attacks. September 8, at 00:10 a.m. the duty officer at EMERCOM received information about an explosion and fire in a residential building on Guryanov Street. Within 15 minutes fire and rescue personnel were at the scene, fully shocked by the unprecedented devastation in front of their. Building No.19, a 9-storey building was blown up. According to the residents, there were two explosions - at first a small one, which some people heard, and right away ran to the staircase, followed a large explosion which completely destroyed two entrance corridors.
January 10, 2008, the largest highway in The U.S. was blocked with an unprecedented traffic accident. Early in the morning, more than 200 machines ran into each other on the highway in the state of Florida. According to preliminary information, the accident occurred because of almost zero visibility on the highway due to heavy fog. The fog took till noon to dissipate, and all the time the gigantic pile of metal continued to grow. Dozens of people were injured, and two died. Still, monetarily and fiscally, the accident is still considered the worst highway catastrophe in Florida’s history.
On a Sunday morning in April on a highway near the city of Barcelona, in the province of Anzo?tegui, in the north-east of Venezuela, there was yet a terrible road accident with loss of life.
September 2002. The wreck of a passenger train in India. The most terrible accident in the history of the country.More than a hundred people died. The tragedy occurred in the eastern state of Bihar, near the Rafigang station. While moving across a bridge, a train coming from Calcutta to Delhi, was derailed. Four of the 18 cars of the Express fell into the Dhavi River. At this point the train had nearly one thousand passengers.
This catastrophe took place in Dubai. An Il-86 carrying Russian tourists prepares for landing. The only slight problem is that the pilots have, um, forgotten to deploy the landing gear! This one too would qualify for “less than perfect landing” status. It turns out that without any landing gear, things get messy pretty quickly.
It’s a calm Saturday afternoon. We’re at aviation festival near Samara. The pilot flying the prototype is the famous Russian aircraft designer Igor Vakhrushev. What no one knows, however, is that this will be his last flight. Everything’s going according to plan. Here’s the take-off, the plane levels off and passes the aerodrome. There are a few seconds of calm before things go horribly wrong. It seems that the tail of the plane had been damaged, perhaps as the plane was transported onto the field. The plane literally falls out of the sky from about 90 feet (up). Sadly, despite local medical technician’s best efforts, Vakrushev did not survive. His legacy does, however, as many planes that he designed still fly today.
Perhaps this St. Petersburg teenager’s life just wasn’t as wrought with danger and excitement as it could’ve been. Well, for whatever reason, he’s hatched a brilliant scheme to fly from one roof to another dressed as Batman. Makes sense so far. Well, incredibly, he hangs on all the way, and, as a reward, he gets to crash into a ventilation shaft on the roof!
The place is Nizhny Novgorod, Russia’s third largest city. The inhabitants of this apartment building called the emergency service saying that they heard muffled yells for help from inside the building. The rescue rangers discovered that a girl had somehow gotten stuck in the ventilation shaft around the second floor.
